Academic Advisor Meeting

     All first-year students were asked to have our first meeting with our Academic Advisor. We were divided into groups and my group consisted of 8 students and our Academic Advisor was Madam Nik Norsyamimi. We were invited to our group’s Whatsapp and decides the date of the meeting with our Academic Advisor. We decided to conduct our meeting on the 10th of November 2021 at 10 a. m.

     During the meeting, all of us introduced ourselves one by one. We introduced our name, age, race, and educational background and our Academic Advisor asked about our future after completing our study. She even advised us to always explore and try something new in life. Besides that, we were also asked a few questions to our Academic Advisor regarding her educational experiences, study tips, and about Academic Advisor. Our meeting session lasted for an hour.

     Based on the first official meeting with our Academic Advisor, I gained a lot of information about my friends and our Academic Advisor. I think having an Academic Advisor will be helpful for me during my study at UNIMAS because they will guide and help us when we have problems such as course registration problems, attendance, and personal problems as well.

Academic Advisor Meeting

PeTARY Sharing

     Students were invited to join the PeTARY Sharing via Webex based on their program and were presented by Madam Norjuriah Binti Ramli one of the PeTARY facilitators. We were told about the PeTARY facilities.

     PeTARY has an online catalog to search PeTARY collection in any type of resources available such as books, media material, maps, magazines, and printed journals. It can help us look for the location of a material that we need, consists of all the PeTARY collections and we can check the status of the material. Besides that, every user will be recorded for borrowing purposes and we can make a reservation of the material if there are other users borrowing it. We also can do an online renewal on the material we borrowed. Renewal can be made before the due date and only 3 times of renewal are given. 

     We can search journal articles in the library catalog by entering the title, subject, or keywords and browse for the specific journal article that is suitable. To know more about an article, simply just click the title and the detailed information will be shown.

     Next, inter library loan is a service for users to borrow books and articles from another library that is not available in the PeTARY collection. To make a request, users must click the Inter Library Loan request under the search bar and users must log in using a single ID. After that, click “your ILL request” and click “New inter library loan request”. Then, the user needs to fill in the request form and submit it.

     Based on the sharing, I will know how to use the PeTARY facilities very well and wisely upon my study at UNIMAS. I know where and how to search a material that I need too!

Volunteerism Project Discussion

     On 8th December 2021, our lecturer asked us to create a volunteerism project in a group of 5. A volunteerism project is a mechanism for young people to bring about positive change in society, and it is becoming more and more relevant as a mechanism to engage young people in global peace and sustainable human development. We need to choose one theme from the 8 theme options given. My group chose the mental health theme.

     Each group will need to brainstorm as a group to provide a suitable title and ideas for creating the volunteerism project. We can select from any sources regarding the current issues that our community concerns a lot and Our group decided to on the project title about Sexual Harassment. We were also asked to provide an E-poster, a video presentation as well as evaluate our peers.

     Throughout the volunteerism discussion, each one of us shared our ideas and opinions on the project. We choose which of the ideas were more suitable to present and used them for points or explanation purposes. In the group’s video presentation, I was given the part to provide one video regarding Sexual Harassment in Malaysia and record a short explanation video about it. After recording the video, we will combine our videos into a slide presentation that was prepared by our leader using Canva. All of us participate in doing the video presentation.

     Based on the discussion, my group was able to discuss together without any problem for our volunteerism project. I learned that it is important to think and voice out each of our opinions in a discussion to make sure everything is satisfied and create a win-win situation among all of us.

DISCUSSION

Volunteerism Project
(Sexual Harassment)

     Based on the volunteerism project, I have improved a lot in my softskills when communicating with other group members by communicating properly and learning about volunteerism project purposes for young people. Volunteerism can help young people like us to develop our capacity and skills to become active leaders and citizens. Volunteering can also help us prepare for employment and transition to responsible adulthood. I believed that I already gained the skills that require in the job market such as problem-solving, management, teamwork, creativity, and negotiation. Our team had chosen Sexual Harassment as our volunteerism project. Below is our E-poster.

academic writing skills (activity)

     Our lecturer asked us to write academic writing based on two articles given by her. We need to produce a good academic paper by having good skills in academic writing and avoiding plagiarism in all of our academic writing. For plagiarism, we learned how to make a good citation by doing paraphrasing, quoting, and summarizing a reference or points.

My Reflection throughout this semester

     All the learning units given were understood very well. I do not have any problem understanding the activities, tasks, and projects that we need to do. I enjoyed doing all the learning units together with my team members because all of our members cooperated responsibly and were always responsive in every discussion.

 

     Dr Ida has been showing and teaching us to be more active for our softskills class. She was able to guide us throughout this one semester without any problem. She conducted her online class punctually and always tried to communicate with us by asking simple questions about our assignments, our reflections after each of our classes ended, and our experiences to anything. I enjoyed all her classes and loved to have her as my learning facilitator again for the next semester.

 

     Based on all the classes, I would recommend having more activities regarding this course that all students can participate in online. For example, having the students conduct and manage an event that will be joined by students, facilitator or make it a public event. An event that will have small activities or games, interesting event purposes, and others. Let the students manage it so it will improve their softskills as well as their volunteerism to make the event a success
